In early 2008, Mike met with Ronnie Frostad to discuss the possibility of creating bronze art sculptures that could safeguard and display pens, watches, jewelry and even be used as an urn. The first two designs of "Heirloom StrongBoxes" that came from the collaboration between Z Nico and Frostad Atelier are the Eternal Guardians and the Immortal Stallions.

Mike worked with the entertainment industry for many years. During his days at Intergraph Computer Systems and Boxx Technologies, Mike interacted with animation studios like Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks and Sony Imageworks to provide the 3D graphic technology for creating Computer Generated Images (CGI). His position as GM for Blur Studio in Venice Beach, California also afforded Mike the opportunity to participate first hand in the creation of special f/x for movies, CG animation, graphic design, ride films, game cinematics and more. Working with some of the most talented artists in the world was fun and exciting but Mike didn't have the same feeling for virtual art as he did for art that was tactile in nature.

As a collector of pens, watches, knives and all things beautiful, Mike wanted the Z Nico Heirloom StrongBox sculptures to reflect his passion for art and make a statement about their owners. The safes should also be useful and accommodate oversize pens, large watches, custom knives, small weapons, jewelry and personal items. The Z Nico StrongBoxes needed to be objects of beauty while protecting their contents and providing a deterrent from theft.
